Elemental Diet

Postby alanp on Thu May 24, 2007 5:52 am

Hi, not sure where to ask this but what 'exactly' is an elemental diet and is there *any* way to make it at home? For example I see plenty of them in cans online but they cost a hunk of change!

So is it possible to 'make' at home? Thanks!

Hi Alan,

See Chris' post earlier about the different 'kinds' of elemental diets:

Yes, you can mix up your own shakes at home and the basic recipe is:

25 grams whey protein isolate
50 grams carbohydrate mix (like maltodextrin)
1 capsule mulivitamin/mineral
1 gram L-Glutamine
2 grams total of mixed amino acids.

Whip in blender with 1 cup water and 1 tbsp. Udo's or flax oil. Sweeten with Stevia and whatever natural flavor extract you prefer.

take care,
Jini

Elemental shake ingredients

Postby Carolyn on Fri Jun 01, 2007 2:32 am

I have been looking for a local source of whey protein isolate and have become quite confused as there is whey protein isolate and hydrolysed whey protein isolate which has been enzyme treated to break down the protein (pre-digested) to more easily absorbed forms. Apparently the more hydrolysed it is, the more bitter the taste and the more expensive it is. Am I right thinking that the more hydrolysed it is the better, but if taste and price are an issue then the unhydrolysed whey protein isolate will be OK?

In looking for a local carbohydrate source, I found d-glucose which is also known as dextrose monohydrate. Is this OK to use?

It would be so much easier if we could buy Absorb Plus in Australia without having to pay international freight !!!!!

Hi Carolyn,

Not sure what you're looking at, but whey protein isolate IS hydrolyzed. The key terms to look for when purchasing a whey protein are:

- whey protein isolate (not concentrate, etc.)
- cold-extracted
- cross-flow membrane extraction

For the carbohydrate, no I don't think the dextrose monohydrate would be a good idea - it will uptake way too fast. Look for:

- maltodextrin (extracted from corn)
or
- tapioca maltodextrin (extracted from cassava root)

Then use stevia to sweeten.

I know Imix would love to have a distributor or licensor in Australia, so if you know of anyone, please email them!
