Low Dose Naltrexone for Crohn's Disease

Postby Donna on Mon Apr 09, 2007 4:23 pm

A coworker shared an article with me from the Health & Healing March 2007 publication which suggested that low-dose naltrexone (LDN) has had positive results for the treatment of CD. Does anyone have any opinions or further information regarding this treatment?

Thoughts on low-dose naltrexone

Postby Nicole on Tue Apr 10, 2007 2:42 pm

Hi, Donna.

I had actually seen/read that webpage before. I do like the premise of boosting the immune system. The fact that this works to ameliorate active Crohn's adds further evidence to IBD having an infectious component. In this respect, it is similar to the study Jini mentions in Chapter 2 of LTYG involving leukine (another immune stimulant) and Crohn's.

On the other hand, I have learned to be very cautious about drugs. They can be such powerful substances that often, in "fixing" one thing, they knock some other system out of whack.

My own experience has been that by following the healing diets, taking Wild Oregano Oil, probiotics and various other supplements, including the immune system strengtheners/balancers Jini mentions in Chapter 2 of LTYG and pursuing healing on the emotional/spiritual level with EFT has brought me into remission from Crohn's. And the beauty of that is, rather than having some other system unbalanced as my digestive system improves, I feel that my entire being has benefitted from this program.

If you are interested in trying out the low-dose naltrexone, however, I encourage you to do a little more research online first. For instance, do a Google search for "dangers of naltrexone". See if you can find a website, like askapatient.com, where you can hear firsthand from patients who've used the drug what their experiences were. I did this when I was researching Asacol, right after I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. You may turn up nothing, but the important thing is that you're doing the work necessary to make an informed decision, trying to learn about both the pros and the cons of any particular medicine before you commit to taking it.

All the best,
Nicole

Yes, I too have never come across a drug that does not do harm and damage or unbalance something else.

I can only 'second' everything Nicole has written.
