Advice - Ileum inflammation

Postby briansanders on Mon Jun 15, 2009 8:14 pm

Hi,

I have ordered Jini's book and am waiting for it to arrive in the mail. In the meantime, I was hoping for some help. I had a colonoscopy with biopsy last week and it indicated that I have inflammation with some ulcers in my lower small intestine. I am not sure about taking azathioprine, which my GI has suggested, and wanted to know what Jini would suggest to treat the inflammation and ulcers. I currenlty have no pain and only go to the bathroom 1x per day, sometimes 2x.

Also, where do the random posts about weird unrelated topics come from?

Thanks.

What's your diagnosis? What meds are you currently taking?

I see from your other post your dx is Crohn's. What meds are you on? It seems odd to me that your doc would want to put you on such a high powered immunosuppresant when your symptoms seem to be mild.

High doses of a good quality fish oil (omega-3) is the best way I've found to combat inflammation. L-glutamine is very healing for the gut.

Hi Darkangel,

Thanks for replying. I am currently on Entocort, 6mg and a fish oil from costco. I am going to visit with my doctor tomorrow to discuss azathioprine but am not sure if I am going to start the medication at this point.

I had a colonscopy last week that revealed inflammation and ulcers in the ileum. I do not have any major sxs and go to the bathroom usually 1x per day. However, my doctors email to me the other day was, "It is completely your choice whether you want to start medications or not. However, you had significant ulceration in your small bowel and over time (maybe 1 year maybe 10, hard to predict) this will cause you problems. If you want to wait until you develop more symptoms, that is fine, but by then you may need surgery if there is a lot of scarring rather than medical therapy."

Naturally, that kind of scared me. She is a crohn's specialist at the university of san francisco. I do not know what to do.

Thanks,
Brian

IMHO, there are natural therapies you could definitely try before you resort to an immunosuppresant. You're very fortunate to be living in San Francisco where there are excellent alternative and complimentary medicine physicians. I envy you.

In addition to reading LTYG, I'd highly recommend you read the book Optimal Digestion. It's another great source of cutting edge alternative and medical therapies to treat all types of digestive issues. This book is made up of the writings of a multitude of progressive doctors, clinicians and researchers. And the great thing is, it provides contact information for these folks. One in particular that I was very impressed with is Len Saputo, M.D. who has a practice in your area. I worked with him via phone and he was quite helpful, but there's only so much you can do long distance. Here's a link to his site, if you're interested:

And a bio:

Thanks for information. This clinic is only 15 minutes from where I live and I will definitely check it out.

Good luck to you. As I said, I envy you. I've found doctors in your area, in NYC and Atlanta I'd like to see, but there's no GI in my area (Little Rock, AR) who does anything other than the traditional allopathic drugs and surgery. I think I've been through about six different GIs, to no avail. So far, I've been unable to justify the expense of a trip out of state for treatment. However, I have a colonscopy scheduled for next week. I'm at the 10 year mark and my current GI is preaching colon cancer to me. If things don't look good on the scope - in spite of the fact that I feel pretty good - I may have to pack my bags.
