pain and fever - advice needed

Postby FNG on Mon Apr 13, 2009 5:16 pm

Dear Jini and Nicole,

About 8 months ago I’ve done the remission diet for 5 weeks and since then I’m following the WOO protocol, taking aloe vera juice, NAG, L-glutamine and 1 absorb plus shake every morning with all supplements (including udo’s oil)
My symptoms gradually improved and I felt strong and healthy.

About 2 months ago I started having mild upper abdominal pain, it didn’t feel like anything major, I thought it comes as a reaction to certain foods. I had blood tests and everything was fine except of my Fe and iron that were low. Hemoglobin was ok (11.7)

I travel a lot and now I’m in one of my journeys. Few days ago the pain in my upper ab has gotten worse, it is still not bad and I feel it only when I move (lean forward, or movements that bend my upper body, I used to have this kind of pain in my lower ab). Today my fever went up to 100F and I’m feeling weaker than before. I had a few days of running diarrhea and now I’m having 2-3 times soft stool every day with undigested food. I thought I might do 1-2 weeks of the remission diet but I don’t have absorb plus shakes here and it will take another few days until I get home. I wanted to know if there is anything you recommend me to do in the meantime until I get home as I don’t want things to worsen.

Which diet should I follow? which supplements should I take (I’ve got most of them with me)? is there anything else I can do? should I go on the remission diet when I get home (in 3-6 days)?

Hi, there.

It sounds to me like you might have a "bug," especially since you're travelling (and most especially if you're not in a "developed" country). What comes to mind is something Jini did when everyone else in her family got sick with something viral (vomiting and diarrhea) and she didn't want to get it!

She started with a "loading dose" of 50 drops of wild oregano oil. She then took 10 drops of wild oregano oil every two to three hours. You do need to make sure that you leave a two-hour window before you take your probiotics at bedtime. The following day, continue to take the 10 drops of wild oregano oil every two to three hours, but don't repeat the large 50-drop dose.

Of course, you wouldn't want to take such a high dosage long-term...I wouldn't for more than two or three days and then back off to the typical Phase One dosage. However, Jini did fine with it. I also tried it and did fine with it. So as long as you tolerate the wild oregano oil well, this is what I would do to quickly knock out whatever's taken hold.

As far as diet, just do your best to stick with foods you know to be well-tolerated by your system. If you're able to source a bone-based broth (ideal if you have a kitchen and can make it yourself, as it doesn't require a lot of attention to make/cook), that's one of my favorite things to "eat" when I'm under the weather with anything.

Then, when you're back home, if you feel like you need to build yourself back up a little, go on the IBD Remission Diet for just a few days. Assuming what you have is just an acute virus, bacterial infection, whatever, that should be all you need.

Take care,
Nicole

Thank you for your quick reply.
I tried taking WOO 5 times a day and at the same time went on a very strict diet of just rice/rice noodles, olive oil and a little bit of papaya and mango which I know are well tolerated by my body. The fever and pain disappeared. Yesterday I started eating other foods as well and again had fever and pain. The fever stayed for about 4-5 hours in the afternoon and by the night it went down to normal again. I suspect that this is some kind of food allergy or intolerance and the fever is a symptom of that.
In the last couple of days my stool is quite formed with just a little bit of undigested food (in the last few weeks I had lot of undigested food, it was very soft and sometimes watery and more frequent). I don't really see a connection between the fever and my bowl movement.
I've noticed that when I get this fever, my digestive system feels more sensitive (painful)

Is it something that you're familiar with as a symptom of food allergy? I've searched online and found some articles that mention fever as a possible symptom.

Hi, there.

Well, I don't know that fever is a particularly common reaction to a food that a person is sensitive or allergic to. All the same, I definitely can't discount it: A food sensitivity can definitely provoke an immune response. So intuitively, why couldn't the immune response include fever?

I'd follow your gut on this one. If it was me, I'd probably continue on the wild oregano protocol (at least Phase Two) as well as avoiding the foods that provoked the response. Give it at least a couple of weeks without those foods. Then, if you wish to, you can re-test them, one at a time. If your body again reacts with pain and/or fever, that's a pretty clear message to me to avoid them in future, at least for a good long time. As your body heals and rebalances, it may come to tolerate those foods again - or it might not. Everyone's different...so go with your own intuition on whether to cut them out permanently or whether to re-test again in several months to a year.

I hope that helps - I know sometimes it's quite a daunting thing to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together when your body becomes very sensitive!

All the best,
Nicole
