Two mind/body books to help 'listen to your gut'

Postby ssr on Sun Jan 28, 2007 5:51 pm

Here are two book suggestions to help anyone interested in following Jini's LTYG suggestions for getting more in touch with the body, and for breathing, which is so intimately connected to the emotions, etc.:

'Focusing'---by Ann Weiser Cornell--a small book that instructs you in dialoging with your body in depth.

'The Breathing Book'--by Donna Farhi--Donna is an excellent writer and yoga instructor. This book is very detailed, but really gives a terrific perspective on the power of the breath, its relationship to your health, mentally, emotionally and physically. The exercises are marvelous and can really help get you more in touch with yourself.

Both can be found on Amazon and, often, Borders.

Hi Susan,

Thankyou I will check this out as I am very interested in this.
I have a tendancy of jutting my chin forward. This not only knocks the whole body off balance but also inhibits breathing. Every time i ask my chin to resume the correct position i notice i will automatically fill my lungs.

However I can tell myself to do this a million times a day and my chin will just keep getting out there again so i think i have to tackle it from another angle, perhaps the breathe. I think I hold it a lot.

Do you think this is all tied in with the type of person you are. I have tendancy to take too much on and there is probably always an underlyng sense of panic in case i don't achieve..which is rarely the case.

chin jutting/personality type/breathing patterns

Postby ssr on Sun Feb 04, 2007 8:56 pm

Hi L. Sexton,

I cannot recommend these books highly enough for what you are talking about...both of them.

And...yes, I do think this is all tied up in personality type...sounds like you are 'leading' with your chin and very determined in what you do....leading to some body tension. You might 'ask your chin' why it keeps jutting out. Get in a quiet, meditative state, ask your question and see what comes up...without censoring. That is really the most simplistic form of 'Focusing'...dialoguing with your body...and really listening/following through on what it has to tell you. As for your comment about breath holding...if you sense that, then you probably are indeed holding it...not good. I do that too. The Breathing Book is very involved, but very friendly and the level you need to break bad breathing habits. I do believe that the breath holds a big key to how the nervous system functions and the nervous system, of course, holds a big key to how the digestive system functions.

Good luck; sounds like you are on the right track!
