what would you advise your son

Postby Beth on Mon Mar 30, 2009 5:53 pm

If your son had a recent flare-up that involved pain as far as symptoms and bowel movements for the past 4 years are approx 3X per day and in liquid form and he has no IC valve and 8 inches of ileum adjacent to the valve was also removed 4 years ago , and you wanted to advise a do-able plan that you as the parent have no control over :? for a busy college student, what supplements eg. psyllium, L-glutamine, bentonite, Coenzyme Q, Aloe, Vit B12, probiotics , etc would you recommend (assuming AM and/or PM is the most compliant time to ingest those supplements) if the hope is to firm up the stool and promote a calm and healing gut and provide for the possibility  that his diet is not providing all of the nutrients that he needs for health. We did meet with Andy Bryce so our son could benefit from the knowledge of EFT. Just trying to put the pieces together that we as the non-Crohns sufferers have no control over implementing - we can only provide and encourage and hope for compliance :? As the parents, of an adult child, we are have difficulty putting the pieces together because our minds just aren't functioning real well due to worry, lack of sleep, recent trauma of seeing our son in such pain - please forgive our flat-line brain activity at this point and thank you for being there! We read and we just get flooded. :?

Hi, Beth.

There was actually a question similar to this asked on the teleseminar I hosted with Jini as guest. You can listen to the entire thing here:

http://www.listen2yourgut.com/meet-Jini ... mpson.html

The gist was that ultimately, a young adult really needs to want to - and be determined to - pursue natural healing himself or herself for it to work. And maybe in the middle of college is a tough time to make that work; some people may feel they need to rely on pharmaceuticals to get through college, with the intention to wean off and pursue other means of healing when the time feels more "right".

He certainly can take aloe vera juice and MucosaHeal to help sooth the digestive tract and I would definitely recommend probiotics if he does nothing else - they can only benefit him. Finally, L-glutamine is terrific for firming up the stools, but it must be taken on an empty stomach and is best taken in divided doses, rather than all at once. He could try a single dose of L-glutamine first thing in the morning and see how he reacts to it, but do start small (like 1/4 or 1/2 tsp. and work up); if he takes too much and it firms the stool up too much, that can be quite uncomfortable for a colon that's used to dealing with a very soft, mushy stool. Then take the probiotics...as he is having only three bowel movements per day, I think Natren's Healthy Trinity would be fine and is certainly easiest to take, which he'll probably like...at night. Fifteen to twenty minutes after taking the probiotics, he can take 1/4 cup of aloe vera juice and 3 MucosaHeal.

I hope this is of some help...I talk to a lot of parents and my heart goes out to you. I think it's even harder being the parent of an ailing child than it is to be the one who's ill.

Sympathetically,
Nicole
