Probiotics and Honey

Postby Lindy on Sun Feb 15, 2009 2:51 pm

I often eat cereal with a bit of honey on it right around the time I take my Healthy Trinity.

I was just thinking today that honey has anti-bacterial properties and wondering if it could affect the Healthy Trinity?

I know garlic is supposed to be kept separate from probiotics, but I have never heard anything about honey.

Thanks,
Lindy

Hi, Lindy.

You know what, that's a really great question. You're right, several properties of honey make it antibacterial. Wikipedia has a neat article on it, for anyone who's interested.

(Scroll down to "Modern Use of Honey")

So intuitively, yes, it seems to me that it would indeed be best to take your probiotics away from the honey. I don't have a hard and fast answer for it, but I'll ask Jini if she does.

Stay posted.

Take care,
Nicole

Yes, raw honey has strong antibacterial properties (among others) so I would not take together with probiotics. Especially if its Manuka honey!
