Diet and Bleeding

Postby ivann on Tue Jul 22, 2008 11:57 pm

Hello everyone,

I am wondering about what people's experiences were with the "Stop Intestinal Bleeding Diet". I have had UC for the past 4 years, mostly in the lower bowel.Usual symptoms are constipation blood and mucous when it gets aggravated. Currently taking Salofalk enemas every night. I just recently stopped taking the pills, I was on 8 a day before, but I didn't feel they were having any effect.

About 8 months ago I had a flare up when moving to a new city to go to school. I used a dietary approach similar to the SIBD back then and was able to avoid going on new medication. However, my energy levels were terrible and I lost a lot of weight. Was pretty much like the SCD without nuts and without dairy, and I used a lot of recipes out of Nourishing Traditions. When I do eat grains/complex carbs I can gain the weight I lost back within about a week. I know the SIBD allows some rice, I am just a little afraid to incorporate that into my diet becuase I am still thinking in terms of the SCD.

I would love to hear what people's experiences are with the SIBD. My overall concern is that I really feel diet can get me out of these flares, but that I am vey slow to heal.

Thanks!

Ivan

I just got off the elemental diet to treat my IBD about 3 weeks ago, that stopped the bleeding completly.

Eating solid foods again and I found if I ate too much the colon got stretched and I would have mild bleeding. Right now I am on the SCD diet and I still have on and off intestinal bleeding.

Rather than eating a huge meal which can really put strain on the lower intestine. Try drinking an AbsorbPlus shake with udos or flax oil if you need to gain weight and build up your energy, since you can get nutrients to heal without aggravating your stomach. Try eating soft foods such as vegetable soups with a shake for a meal to give your stomach a break.

I find it usually makes the bleeding settle down. The AbsorbPlus is a good way to gain weight and keep your energy up.

Also remember to keep your vitamin E, A, C, Iron, Zinc levels up to help with healing.
