SHELF LIFE FOR GEORGE'S ALOE VERA?

Postby ssr on Sun Apr 06, 2008 1:58 pm

Hello all-

Unrefrigerated, opened, but tightly capped, can anyone tell me what is the shelf life for George's? I had a poor reaction to it, and have just let my bottle sit at average household room temp for six months or so. I feel I may get a better answer from this forum than from the company. Thier website, surprisingly, does not say anything but 'long shelf life'.

Thanks so much,

Susan

Hi, Susan.

I apologize - I just noticed your post here. I guess I'm only in the habit of looking at the main and IBD Remission Diet Forums. Fifty lashes on the eyeball with a wet noodle for me!

I can't honestly say I know the answer to your question. I can tell you that I had a gallon of aloe vera juice that I used about three-quarters of and then let it sit in my refrigerator for months. I finally decided to finish it to make room in my fridge and even after all that time, opened, it still smelled and tasted fine.

So my guess is that if it's unopened, it's perfectly fine.

Actually, I just had an idea. I logged in to the back-end of the Holistic Health Shoppe to look at the lot numbers and expiration dates of the aloe vera juice they have in stock. From that, it looks like it has a five-year shelf life, unopened.

Hope that helps!

Hi Nicole--

not to worry about the slower reply!! I do the same thing with the different forums....and I have been sitting on this for so long...a little longer sure doesn't matter.

I guess I didn't say that the George's WAS open....just tightly recapped. Will call them, but am sure they will say its not good...they can't take a chance on all the variables here.

Thanks so much for your reply and research! I will post if I find out anything of interest from the company.

Hi Susan,

Yes, there's no "official" maximum. However, I figure it's best to just use common sense regardless.

If this is a live, active product (which it is) then ideally, it should be in the fridge. Potatoes (for example) can sit unrefrigerated for a long period of time, but they are not inactive.

My opinion is that 6 months is a VERY long time - even if it were in the fridge!

So, refrigerate after opening and then I would keep it no longer than 3-4 months.

just my opinion,
Jini

Hi Jini

Somehow I was not notified of your reply and am just now seeing it. Thanks so much. Just for the record, I spoke with George's and they said thier product's shelf life, opened or not, and non-refrigerated is 5 years. Seems a little extreme, I agree more with your thinking.

Thanks again--
