Gut is healed up, but now have acne problems?

Postby getinthere on Wed Mar 26, 2008 4:26 am

Hi,

I "got" severe ulcerative colitis almost a year ago...did the elemental diet for seven weeks plus all of the supplements recommended...and was thrilled thrilled thrilled when, just as Jini and many others said, I healed up. In fact, my bowel movements and gut were so much more healthy than I could ever remember. I did regress in my diet afterwards to eating more sugar than I should, due to severe sugar cravings...that I believe were due to my severe anemia plus some emotional stress...this is more resolved now...but anyway, I now have pretty bad acne... I have a suspicion that it is an allergy, I'm thinking wheat. I have always had a little acne here and there, but now I have it consistently on my face in the same places. My face went completely clear when I was on the elemental diet, which is why I am suspecting an allergy. Has anybody else come across this? Any suggestions?

Hi, Christy.

Yes, what you're saying about your suspicion makes perfect sense, especially given the difference between your skin while on the elemental diet and afterwards. I notice big differences in my skin depending on what I eat, too.

There's an interesting article about wheat/gluten sensitivity in the latest issue of Good Health is Real Wealth that talked about various tests you can take regarding wheat. Another really simple way to do it is to completely eliminate wheat (and possibly other gluten-containing foods such as barley and rye) for at least two weeks to see if you start to notice any differences.

Hope that helps...
