Son can not take more AbsorbPlus after 4.5 weeks

Postby Khushroo on Wed Jul 11, 2007 6:46 pm

We are in a situation with my son who has UC. He has been on IBD Remission Diet for 4.5 weeks, has seen progress, but for the past 3-4 days has gradually developed aversion towards AbsorbPlus. He has now come down to barely taking in 2-3 shakes (down from 5). He throws up within half an hour of taking a shake. I have decided to start him on Food Re-intro from today (instead of waiting full six weeks). Am already giving him Emergen-C to avoid dehydration. Hopefully he will be able to start taking food and improve his ability to take shakes along with it.

It will help to hear advice from Jini / Nicole / Anyone who has seen this happen.

More details are (repeating from my post under a different subject so as to bring it in focus):

Hi Jini,

Thanks for your guidance. We started the 17 yo on Wild Oregano Oil (10 drops three times a day) on 6/23. His blood did reduce as a result of that and elemental diet (2nd wk by then)! Initially he was at 1 tsp per 8oz cup of blood visible in bm (a visual-only measure invented by us) and came down to 0.5. Average bowel movements are 5 per day and he sees maximum that much blood in 3 of them. He also gained appx. 2.5 lb in 3 weeks (86 lb now) with 5-6 shakes a day (he can't imagine taking the 9 shakes for the 4000 cal you have recommended)!

Now we have a problem. since Thu 7/5 he has been feeling full and can barely take more than 4 shakes a day - which also seems to be becoming increasingly difficult. In the last two days he had a few explosive bm and he also threw up once or twice. He has lost 0.5 lb in the two days. Says that his gut generally feels squeazy (constantly wanting to go). Any guidance will help on resolving this.

Also, this is the 5th week of the elemental diet. Although his blood in stool has decreased, he does keep seeing it. If elemental diet is giving rest to his colon, why does he bleed at almost the same rate every day (has the healing stopped or the rate of healing dropped)? Will it stop when he starts eating again? Should we continue to the 6th week of elemental diet as we had planned, or stop it at the end of the 5th week?

BTW we saw a pediatric GI who also practices alternative med. He spoke highly of you! I will share that info on the forum soon.

Thanks,
Khushroo

Hi, khushroo.

I'm so sorry your son is going through this; I can only imagine how stressed you all must be feeling as a result.

Here are my thoughts; see if any of them click with you and your son.

First, take a deep breath! There were a few things I did whenever I had a setback. One was to re-read certain sections in LTYG, particularly Chapter One about the up and down nature of a holistic healing journey and the other was in Chapter Five about seeing symptoms as messages. Or read anything else that is encouraging and empowering on a deep, personal level for you/your son. That spark, that encouragement, that deep down "I can do this" is a big, big part of healing; keep adding wood to that inner flame...it's one of the best investments you and he will ever make.

This doesn't mean ignoring any little voice inside that says, "No, I can't do this" if there is one. Ignored, those voices don't go away. EFT is a fantastic way of neutralizing those inner doubts and blocks and at the same time replacing them with more empowering beliefs and intentions.

The hardest thing of all is to allow your son to take the wheel on his own healing journey. My mum is currently in hospital and this is something I have to keep reminding myself of. I want to take over her treatment by having her do everything that's helped me, but in the end, deep down, I know that the best thing I can do is to stand by and offer love whatever choices SHE makes. But I know that's very, very hard when you're seeing someone you love feeling so poorly; I'm experiencing it.

You may find some helpful physical suggestions in the following links, the first dealing with vomiting and the second with bleeding:

Jini may have some additional suggestions for you as well.

I hope this is of some help and comfort to you.

Sincerely,
Nicole
