bad reaction to IBD diet

Postby bellapalter on Wed Jun 10, 2009 3:14 am

hello, I just turned 21, and was diagnosed with colitis 2 years ago. I have tried all different meds which at times made me better, but eventually stopped working. My doctor basically wanted me to do surgery, but there is absolutely no way I would ever do that. I tried scd, which helped but not enough and I got frustrated with it, so I stopped. I then started seeing a holistic doctor that practices reiki. She has helped heal others with colitis/chrons. After 2 months of seeing her, and following a very strict diet, I went down from 20 to 8 times a day, almost no bleeding. I desperately wanted to go on vacation bc I live new york, and was sick for already 6 months of cold weather. I cheated there the whole time, but did not get worse. But when I returned for the next month I didn't have any improvement either. My holistic doctor wanted me to go back to drinking chicken broth for a week, and begin reintroducing foods again. I only weigh 80lbs (normal weight 110-115), and also hate he taste of chicken broth. I found Jini's book, and was very excited to try the diet. I last 5 days on the shakes, bc unfortunately I was having a fever of 101-102, and my mostly formed stools turned to only explosive d, about 14 times a day. My holistic doctor was very worried, and told me to stop, and start the dreaded chicken broth. I lasted 4 days on chicken broth, and then I couldn't take the hunger anymore, and began eating chicken and turkey. I am now down to 5 times a day for the last 2 days, but I have mostly d and not formed stools like before. The pain and gas is better though. I also introduced rice today, although she wants me to only have chicken and chicken broth for next week or 2. It is really difficult for me bc I crave more foods, and especially would like something sweet in between meals.

Anyway, I really wanted to do the shakes the full 6 weeks, I think it would have been very helpful, but I felt so horrible on them. I wanted to know if you have heard of others having this type of reaction? Would you recommend I try again? Or does this mean I can't tolerate some ingredients in the shakes? I would really appreciate any other recommendations as well.

Btw I am taking mucosaheal, natren probiotics, a bunch of vitamins and minerals, digestive enzyme's, george's aloe vera, and colloidal silver (instead of the oregano oil bc I tried to introduce it twice, and each time caused bleeding).

Thank you for responding so quickly. I am not expecting quick results, it's just that I felt so bad with so many bm's and high fever. I was wondering if others have experienced a high fever while on the shakes? I actually have already been to see dr.hoffman, his approach is scd, with supplements, and vitamin infusions. He is the one who introduced me to the scd diet. I stopped the vitamin infusions for a while, and have started them again recently.
I am eating chicken, turkey, eggs, and rice now, but maybe if things don't get any better, and you feel that my symptoms on the shakes are not out of the norm, then I will try doing the broth, and less shakes as you suggested.

My earlier posts seem to have disappeared.

I'd guess something in the shakes doesn't agree with you. You may look at trying a protein supplement, meal replacement or medical shake mix to help you gain weight.
