Natural Pain killers?

Postby Dimple on Wed Dec 27, 2006 3:34 pm

Hi, I am posting for my sister who was diagnosed with UC about 2 years ago.
She is currently on the elemental diet. Her meds consists of oil of oregano, Mucosa heal, DGL, Aloe Vera Juice, Bentonite clay, CoQ10, & last but not least Natren Healthy Start System Tripack Powder (Dairy-based). Last night we gave her Bifidobacterium bifidum for the first time. She experienced diarrhea at night after taking the Probiotics. She has alot of pain when passing stool & my mom some times gives her Tylenol for the pain. I have 2 questions. First should she continue to take the Bifidum or stop? I made a mistake & bought the Dairy based version & I think people with UC should avoid all dairy products. My second question is regarding the pain, is there any natural pian killers I can give her? How bad is Tylenol for her UC? I did find that tart cherries are natural pian killers is that safe to eat during flare up with UC?

Natural pain killers

Hi, Dimple.

Sorry to hear that your sister is having a hard time right now.

When someone with IBD is having a flare, his or her intestines are likely to be really hyper-sensitive. So any painkiller, natural or otherwise, has some risks attached. The sour cherries sound really interesting, but if your sister is already struggling with diarrhea, the cherries are likely to aggravate that.

There is one thing I can recommend whole-heartedly for pain relief, as it does not require a person to ingest anything. That is EFT, which you can read about at www.emofree.com. I know it might sound really strange, but it's worked for a lot of people, so I'd certainly download the free manual and give it a try. Personally, I have found it very effective for pain relief.

Certainly a lot of people with IBD are sensitive to dairy products, so you may want to give the vegetarian-based probiotic formulas a try, instead.

How big a dose did your sister take of the Bifido Factor? Because UC is specific to the colon and so is the Bifidus bacteria, it may very well be that her reaction was due to die-off of pathogenic organisms. What does she think, herself? Does she have a "feel" one way or the other? Some people need to start with very small doses and work up gradually. Some people are so sensitive to start out with that they can't even take the probiotics every day to begin with. We all need to improve our gut flora on the road to healing, and ultimately, this means supplementing with all three probiotic species/strains, but some people are able to tolerate much higher doses of probiotics in the beginning than are others.

Don't forget that the stool is usually liquid while on an elemental diet, as well. For that reason, when you say she had diarrhea following her first dose of Bifidus, I'm assuming your referring to frequency more than to consistency.

Yes I mean frequency. Gave her about 1/2 table spoon of Bifidum.

Oil

Hi, Dimple.

Yes, olive oil is a very healthful food. Look for one that says it's cold pressed.

If she's having diarrhea, though, she may need to limit the quantity. Too much may aggravate the D. Most people's tolerance for fat improves as they heal....again, some people are more sensitive than others. Everyone has to do a little bit of experimenting to figure out what works for them.

I'd definitely stick with an Omega-3 source for the elemental shakes, though.....flax oil or Udo's Choice. The Omega-3 EFAs have an anti-inflammatory action in the body which is obviously very beneficial for anyone suffering from an inflammatory disease, like Crohn's or ulcerative colitis.

Giving her Nordic Omega 3 & 9 with shakes atm. Will try a spoon of cold pressed extra virgin oil tonight. Keeping her on the bifdium & does make the stools very pungent. I am guessing this is the result of Bacteria wars in the colon.

Thanks for all your info.
