Zinc supplements

Postby crampygut on Wed Dec 27, 2006 9:54 am

I was wondering if anyone could tell me which foods do not interfere with Zinc absorbtion? I have tried taking Zinc on an empty stomach and it has made me very dizzy and nauseous. I have read that alot of food can cause very poor absorbtion of zinc but I can't find what foods are okay to have with zinc.
Thanks guys :D

Zinc absorption

Postby Nicole on Wed Dec 27, 2006 3:33 pm

Hi, crampygut.

Following are a couple of URLs you can check out regarding zinc absorption. It appears that zinc is best absorbed in a meal containing red meat or poultry and in absence of any grains and/or legumes. Oysters are a food that is naturally very rich in zinc, but they're probably not something most of us are going to eat every day. Grains and legumes contain phytates which decrease zinc absorption.

How much zinc are you taking at a time? This may not be the case with you, but at least one person mentioned on one of the webpages linked above experienced nausea within 30 minutes of taking a large dose of zinc. Just a thought....

Also, keep in mind that our best health is achieved with a balance of all the macro- and micronutrients we need. This is something to keep in mind when supplementing with specific nutrients separately.
