Intoduction and Questions

Postby Napoleon on Wed Apr 08, 2009 5:17 pm

Hello-
I am new to the forum and I would like to introduce myself and ask a few questions. Thanks so much for your book and for the opportunity to relate my information to you.

Upon colonoscopy and tissue biopsy in July, 2008, this is my diagnosis:
** Multiple pieces of rectal mucosa showing mildly active proctitis. Suspicious for limited ulcerative proctitis.

My symptoms are:
Blood and mucus on stool with blood drips during bm; blood and mucus discharge; swelling and burning in rectal area and constipation.
I do have an external hemorrhoid.

At the time of diagnosis I was on a very high fiber and high grain diet (still constipated, but not badly); but otherwise very healthy diet with the exception of sugary snacks - very strong sweet tooth/sugar craving. --- When I suggested to two GI docs that the problem could be diet related, they both rejected to idea and gave prescriptions which didn't help at all.

I have NEVER experienced:
* Diarrhea
* Fatigue or lack of energy; I am very athletic and always very high
energy and get a good amount of sleep at night.
* Abdominal cramping
* Anemia; I give blood regularly and have always tested with good iron
and feel good after giving blood.
* Blood tests showing signs of infection
* Fever
* Weight loss
* Feeling physically unwell

FOOD
I am currently beginning week four of a six-week diet prescribed to me by my naturopath. The diet is no gluten/grain, no sugar, no beef/chicken/turkey - lamb and certain fish are allowed, no dairy. I have adapted the foods allowed on this diet to fit into the Stop Intestinal Bleeding diet (because the naturopath wanted me to include beans, rice, cruciferous and green leafy veg.) and I rotate those foods so that I only eat the same food once every three days. **Although the choice is very limited, I eat a large amount of the allowed foods so that I am not hungry. I have very good energy.
After six-weeks, foods will be reintroduced and I plan to follow Jini's reintroduction schedule.

Day 1
Protein: Wild Cod -- 1 portion per day
Veg: Butternut Squash
Avocado
Sweet Potato
Fruit: Pear --- I seldom eat the fruit for the day

Day 2
Protein: Salmon -- 1 portion per day
Veg: Spaghetti Squash
Carrots
Fruit: Melon

Day 3
Protein: Ground Organic Lamb -- 1/4lb. (weight prior to cooking)
Veg: Pumpkin
Acorn Squash
Cucumber
Fruit: Watermelon

I use no seasoning except a small amount of olive oil and kosher salt.

DRINKS:
I am drinking 8 to 10 large glasses of room temp. filtered (very high quality filter) water; 2 large mugs of weak green tea; and occasionally a tea made of hot water and 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon.

SUPPLEMENTS:
I have been on WOO protocol - Phase 1 for seven weeks -- 5-10 drops/5x day

1 Healthy Trinity at night

MucosaHeal -- just starting today at the severe level (perhaps this is too much?)

Vitamin C -- 4000mg/day in ascorbic acid form

Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega - 3 gel caps/day

FissureHeal before bed

**** I just received the healing implant enema which I will try.

CURRENTLY:
I still have mucus and blood on pieces of stool as well as drips upon bm. Blood on toilet paper. No gushing blood or large amount of blood - I have never had that symptom.

Mucus and blood discharge are slightly decreased.

Swelling/burning almost completely diminished - I have used a hemorrhoid creme on occasion and that helps. Swelling/burning are more present when I have a bowel movement.

I am VERY constipated. *** The more constipated I am, the more blood and mucus discharge I have. I was taking an herbal support/laxative for a while and during that time my stools were very regular and very soft and the blood/mucus discharge almost completely stopped and I felt really good, but naturopath wanted me off the laxative, so I discontinued use and went right back to constipation with blood/mucus discharge.

I am VERY tired of the limited diet, but plugging along and determined to make it to the six week point.

I have a fair amount of stress due to family issues which probably won't change. But, I relax and let things go as much as possible.

I get as much exercise as possible; I am moving around all day even if I am not in full exercise mode.

QUESTIONS:
I want to get healed; what else should I be doing, or what should I change in my current regimen?

Is the Stop Intestinal Bleeding diet for me if I am only experiencing blood on stool and small drips into the stool at the end bm?

I am SO constipated. I have been taking Healthy Trinity for several months. I have tried psyllium, but it always leaves me very constipated. ***Again, I am drinking a lot of water. I am taking 4000mg of vit. C daily.
What can I do here because the blood/mucus seems to be related to how constipated I am.
--- Here is something I have found:
'...constipating foods are foods with a high starch content, such as tubers (potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, carrots, acorn squash, butternut squash).' I am eating A LOT of squash, sweet potatoes and carrots so I might be sabotaging myself with my current diet.

Would the fact that psyllium constipates me make it seem likely that I do not have good gut flora?

Could unmoving fecal matter sitting in my colon be causing this whole problem?

Could I be Mg. deficient?

Thank you again for your book and for any help that you can provide--
Leon

Hi, Napoleon.

I read your post with a great deal of interest. Coincidentally, Jini and I were talking on the phone yesterday and one of the subjects that came up was the new information Jini has been working on specifically regarding constipation - this has been over a year in the works. In any case, I've asked Jini to respond to your question directly.

Regarding your hemorrhoid, I'm not sure how long you've been a "Gold" member. Were you a member when Issue #7 of Good Health is Real Wealth was released? This contained a protocol based on DMSO and potassium iodide that you could use to quickly heal your external hemorrhoid.

http://www.holistichealthshoppe.com/ast ... ?id=51#225

Boy isn't it the truth that we all have something in our family or other relationships that causes some stress! Have you ever explored EFT? This is one of the most powerful healing tools I've come across...and will be an excellent complement to all of the physical things you're doing. If you want to check it out, you can find a lot more information at:

www.emofree.com

And two EFT practitioners whom I can wholeheartedly recommend based on personal experience are Annabel Fisher (www.efthealingcentre.com) and Rue Hass (http://www.intuitivementoring.com/). Both specialize in helping people with chronic or serious illness, as well.

Actually, this reminds me: I happen to know that Annabel has a teleclass series coming up at the end of April specifically for anyone with a chronic illness. I've been through one of Annabel's teleclass series myself and was thoroughly impressed and found the experience effective, enjoyable and valuable. One-on-one sessions are wonderful (I've done them, too and loved them!), but if money is an issue at all, this is a very cost-effective way to receive most of the same benefits.

Stay posted for Jini's reply.

All the best,
Nicole

Re: Constipation Help

Postby Jini Admin on Sat Apr 11, 2009 12:26 am

Hi Leon,

In addition to what Nicole wrote you, to which I say "ditto". It seems to me like your bleeding is coming exclusively from your rectum. In that case, you should have good results from syringing wild oregano oil (7:1 dilution with olive oil) up your rectum, or using the DMSO/Potassium Iodide suppositories in the Infoletter Nicole referred you to. In that case, you also don't need to be on the Stop Bleeding Diet.

For long-term success, you really need my new book, I'm just about finished working on: Listen To Your Colon: The Complete Natural Healing Guide for Constipation And I offer dietary instructions in there that should work well for you. And yes, you're absolutely right about the starchy foods.

If you email Danielle: service (at) holistichealthshoppe.com and tell her I want to send you a review copy - you can be one of my first reviewers and then let me know what you think of it!

I've actually determined that there are two different types of constipation: Peristaltic Constipation and what I call Stenosis Constipation. Here's the definition of the two from the book:

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONSTIPATION

Before we look at treatments for constipation, it is important to first identify which kind of constipation you have. Through the course of my research, consultations with clients, feedback from readers, and my own struggle with constipation; I have come to identify two different types of constipation. Since I have not come across any labels for these in the medical literature (or perhaps I just didn’t read widely enough), I have made up my own labels to distinguish between these two different types of constipation. I call them peristalitic constipation and stenosis constipation. Of course, while most people seem to suffer from one or the other, there are people who suffer from a combination of the two.

1. Peristaltic Constipation

This type of constipation can consist of many different symptoms or factors, but the defining elements are as follows:

*You just don’t often (or rarely, never) feel the urge to have a bowel movement. You can have stool building up in your colon for days, but no urge or urgency to poo.

*If you’ve been constipated for a long time, this build up of stool may not even be uncomfortable anymore.

*When you do have a bowel movement, your stool is large and fairly wide. Even if it is in hard balls, the diameter is larger than half an inch.

2. Stenosis Constipation

I came up with the name for this one based on the medical label of anal stenosis (narrowing, tightness or stricture of the anal canal). Stenosis constipation means that:

* You often feel the urge to defecate. In some cases, the urge can be frequent or continual. You may even feel the stool pushing against your anus, but when you try to poo, it is very difficult to pass stool and sometimes nothing comes out.

*If you’ve had this type of constipation for a long time, then your urge to defecate may have greatly lessened, if not disappeared (remember the bowel is easily trained), however, passing stool is still extremely difficult and your anus/rectum can spasm and be very tight, small.

*When you do manage to pass stool, the stool is very narrow. Sometimes only the width of a flattened pencil. You strain and push mightily and it may feel like you’re passing a huge stool, but when you look in the toilet there’s only a very narrow or small amount of stool. Stool can be soft, hard, balls, or cylinders, but rarely larger than 1/4 inch – 1/3 inch in diameter and the maximum diameter is 1/2 inch.

In the meantime, while you're waiting for us to email you the book and then reading it, here's something (excerpted from the book) you can do to get immediate short-term relief (as in, tomorrow!):

MAGNESIUM & POTASSIUM

Another quick and easy short-term remedy you may have heard of for constipation is to increase your vitamin C in ascorbic acid form (up to 10,000 mg/day). However, I find that ascorbic acid vitamin C, when taken in a high enough dose to have a laxative effect, results in what I call “acid poo” and some mild cramping. And I don’t like it. You can try it if you wish, since lots of vitamin C certainly does benefit the immune system.

What I find works much better is to take magnesium – which has a laxative effect, but is also a muscle relaxant. If you have stenosis constipation, then you should combine the magnesium with potassium – which is another muscle relaxant. See below for detailed dosage recommendations, depending on whether you suffer from primarily peristaltic constipation, or stenosis constipation.

When you first administer this therapy, be prepared for a "clear out" of stool, with multiple bowel movements. Keep going with supplementation and facilitate this clear out until you are passing very mushy or watery stool. Then, cut back the dosage to reach a more comfortable, normal level. Always take magnesium with food to avoid gastrointestinal discomfort and facilitate absorption.

This protocol alone should be enough to get your bowels moving. However, it is a short-term, symptomatic remedy and does not address the root cause of constipation. Remember that for long-term permanent resolution of constipation, you need to ingest a full spectrum of probiotics and normalize your bacterial flora, along with adjusting your diet and lifestyle.

Another easy way to ingest the magnesium (and potassium) needed, plus some good fat (which improves stool texture/density) and get a blast of top quality nutrients, is to put your supplements in this easy shake in place of breakfast, or some other meal:

Jini’s Raw Nutrient Shake

* 1 cup raw milk (from pasture-fed cows only), or homemade yoghurt
* 2 tsp – 1 tbsp. Udo’s Oil (adjust according to taste, the more the better)
maple syrup to taste
* 250 mg magnesium citrate (get in capsule form, so you can just empty the capsule contents into the shake)
* 2 raw organic egg yolks
* 1 raw organic whole egg

Optional: 1 banana
100 mg potassium citrate (in capsule form)

1. Blend together on LOW speed for 5-10 seconds.

2. If adding banana, then blend milk and banana first, until liquid. Then add the other ingredients and blend on low for 5-10 seconds.

My 6 year old daughter also loves this shake and sometimes I will have one for breakfast. If you leave out the magnesium/potassium (when it is not needed), it is just a healthy shake that you can drink at any time.

See my video where I show you how to make this shake at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6Gt6BmXgnc

If you can’t get raw cow’s milk, you can also use raw goat’s milk. Or just use water with a scoop of whey protein isolate – doesn’t taste as good as the raw milk though. Do not use rice milk as rice is constipating. And don’t use soy milk as soy inhibits mineral absorption, blocks thyroid function and contains very high levels of estrogen. You can use homemade almond milk – or if you can find an organic commercial version of almond milk without carrageenan, that would be okay too. To find raw cow or goat milk in your country/city, go to: http://www.realmilk.com

Peristaltic Constipation

So, for persistaltic constipation, start with 250 mg magnesium citrate after a good-sized breakfast or lunch. Or, depending on when you like to have your bowel movement, it may work better for you to take it after dinner. You’ll have to experiment and see what timing works best.

You also need to experiment with dosage, to see which dosage threshold your body needs. So start at 250 mg (once per day, after a good-sized meal) and increase by 125 mg or 250 mg increments, up to 1000 mg per day. Don’t take magnesium on an empty stomach or only after a snack or it may result in some mild nausea and spasming. Take it as I have directed and it should be fine.

If your constipation is really stubborn, you may get better results from using magnesium oxide. The dosage recommendation is the same, but magnesium oxide has a stronger laxative effect.

Stenosis Constipation

Start with 250 mg magnesium citrate and 100 mg postassium citrate after a good-sized breakfast or lunch. Or, depending on when you like to have your bowel movement, it may work better for you to take it after dinner. You’ll have to experiment and see what timing works best. Magnesium and potassium are both nature’s muscle relaxants, so they work very well to relax a tight, rigid internal anal sphincter muscle.

You also need to experiment with dosage, to see which dosage threshold your body needs. So start at 250 mg magnesium (once per day, after a good-sized meal) and increase by 125 mg or 250 mg increments, up to 1000 mg per day. Don’t take magnesium on an empty stomach or only after a snack or it may result in some mild nausea and spasming. Take it as I have directed and it should be fine. You can increase the potassium, if needed, up to 250 mg per day. Technically, you could go higher with potassium, but since I don’t know what your sodium intake or levels are, we don’t want to risk throwing your electrolytes out of balance.

If your constipation is really stubborn, you may get better results from using magnesium oxide. The dosage recommendation is the same, but magnesium oxide has a stronger laxative effect.

Do Not Use High-Dose Magnesium Long-Term

If you use this symptomatic magnesium remedy long-term (without addressing the root cause of your constipation), you may end up with malabsorption of nutrients due to an increased transit time of food through your gastrointestinal tract – also known as "gastrointestinal hurry". This will then result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies, which can cause a host of other problems. This is the same reason it's not a good idea to use drug or herbal laxatives regularly, or long-term.

It's good to take a well-absorbed magnesium supplement every day (in angstrom-sized or transdermal form), but if you're taking just a regular magnesium supplement (citrate, oxide, glycinate, taurate, aspartate, etc.) then absorption ranges from only 4 – 10% and the rest can cause "gastrointestinal hurry" and a laxative effect.

You can check your gastrointestinal transit time by eating a food like corn. From the time you eat the corn kernels, to the time the corn appears in your stool, should be between 12 to 24 hours. If the transit time is less than 12 hours, then you are experiencing "gastrointestinal hurry" and so for long-term usage, should either reduce your magnesium dosage, or switch to a bioavailable form (like angstrom-sized magnesium, or topical, transdermal magnesium). Magnesium is an essential mineral that most of us are deficient in, so don't just stop taking it! Instead, take the time to find the right dosage for your body, or take it in an easily absorbed form.

But, for our purposes here, we are using magnesium in larger doses for the short-term to stimulate bowel movements, until you can get your bacterial flora balanced, address the stressors in your life, and adjust your diet, so that the large doses are no longer needed.

all the best,
Jini

Thank you for your reply.

From your message I have to say that I suffer from peristaltic constipation.

I am currently on 10,000mg vit. C and 1000mg. Mg oxide and experiencing absolutely no results. I think the extreme Mg. gives me a feeling of developing a UTI.
I ended up using a tap water enema over the weekend while on vacation. After the enema I felt great and I wished that I had used it sooner.

The naturalist at the local apothecary recommended that I try:

Planetary Formulas Triphala
which is:

Traditional Ayurvedic compound
A potent yet gentle formula, designed to support the body's natural cleansing process
One of the most important formulas of Ayurvedic herbalism for thousands of years and used as a household staple throughout India
A balanced blend of three Indian herbal fruits, harada, amla, and behada

Based on my diagnosis and symptoms from my introduction, do you have any opinion on this product?

I have tried psyllium and other fibers before and they just seems to make the problem worse. And again, I don't have the blood or mucus in anywhere near the amount unless I am constipated - which is most of the time.

Thanks,
Leon

Hi Leon,

You should have received the book by now. So please read through it and try some of the protocols - yes, there is a flushing enema in there (do NOT use tap water though - only filtered or spring) too.

It would be best if you read the entire book before posting any more related questions.

In the meantime, I haven't tested the Triphala rememdy. If you do, make sure you follow the guidelines given for testing new supplements.
