If you have Listen to Your Gut, you'll find a list of published studies about the dangers of SBO's from pages 468 through 470.
There really are too many to re-list here; suffice it to say that you'll be directed to twenty different studies. These are studies that have appeared in journals such as JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), Journal of Hospital infection, and Journal of Clinical Microbiology.
You're right that you have to be careful about probiotics. In Chapter Two of Listen to Your Gut, to share one example, Jini references a study on
immunodeficient mice (which) found that supplementing with a certain strain of L. reuteri (used in many probiotic blends) caused some of the mice to die, leading the researchers to recommend "the need to proceed cautiously when using high doses of this strain in neonatal, immunocompromised hosts." Therefore, you only want to purchase a probiotic supplement that contains species and strains with a proven, long-term record of human safety.
I hope that helps, but you'll be able to find a lot more information about probiotics and Jini's recommendations on pages 155-185, 386-389, and 468-470 of Listen to Your Gut.
All the best,
Nicole
