treatments and supplements while still on drugs

My daughter has been trying most of Jini's Quick and easy treatment plan for the past 2 weeks. She is trying to wean off Prednisone, is still on Methotrexate. She has started probiotics we've tried both Natren bifidum and acidophilus using the cautious approach !/4 tsp. twice a day. First 1 week of bifidum then we switched to acidophilus for 1 week.
We aren't getting much result with slowing down the diarrhea. I wonder if anything will be effective while she is still on medication?

Supplements while still on pharmaceuticals

Hi, Barb.

I'm sure Jini will also answer and have some advice for you, but I just wanted to offer you some words of encouragement.

I am diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, myself. At my sickest, I had diarrhea six to nine times a day, sometimes as many as twelve times a day. If I had to go out somewhere, I planned ahead by not eating....figuring that if there was nothing in there, there'd be nothing wanting to come out. I lost sleep because of waking up at least once, sometimes three times a night, to have a bowel movement and then not being able to go back to sleep again for hours. As you can imagine, I was not only sick, but profoundly, bone-deep tired.

So that's my history and here are my words of encouragement. Number one, it is definitely possible to improve. I don't consider myself fully healed yet, but I am definitely healed enough now to lead a full and active life. Number two, it takes time, particularly with something like probiotics that works at a deeper level, treating not just symptoms, but one of the likely causative roots of the illness. So please don't be discouraged if you haven't seen much in the way of results after only two weeks of low-dosage probiotics. Keep on slowly increasing the dosage until she's getting between 7-10 billion cfu of each of the recommended species/strains each day. By then, if her experience is anything like mine, you'll probably start seeing some real, measurable progress.

In the meantime, what about trying L-glutamine supplementation? There are instructions for using it under the heading of Diarrhea in chapter two of Listen to Your Gut. That will probably give some symptomatic relief while you're waiting for significant colonies of healthy bacteria to take hold.

I wish you the best.

Excellent reply Nicole and I have nothing to add to that - you have definitely covered all the bases!

hi Nicole
Taken me a while to get back to you ,thanks for the encouragement. It helps to hear from other people dealing with Crohns.
My daughter is doing considerably better ,it's hard to be patient when she is so sick.
