iron supplements safe for IBD'ers

Hi Jini and or Nicole,

I am low on Iron and need to supplement. I know you recommend Ferrasorb as per LTYG but I have read that iron taken orally can be dmaging to inflammed bowels. below I have cut and pasted one of the extracts I found.

Although the relationships are not entirely clear, high iron stores may increase the risk of heart disease, cancer (such as breast cancer), and Alzheimer's disease. Similarly, for those with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), the areas of the bowel that are inflamed appear to have higher amounts of iron.

There may be a possible connection between iron and these chronic illnesses because iron acts as a pro-oxidant, stimulating the damaging effects in the body of substances known as free radicals.

High levels of iron can come from taking iron supplements or eating too much of foods rich in iron, like red meat. The FDA reports that taking up to 45 mg of iron per day is usually considered safe for the general population.

However, if you have heart disease or you are at particular risk for it (for example, you are a man over age 45, a woman who has gone through menopause, or you have high cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure) and you take a multivitamin, it is best to make sure that there is no more than 9 milligrams of iron per daily dose of the vitamin.

Does the above statement also apply to the iron in ferrasorb or does the iron in ferrasorb not cause any damage as other iron supplements? :?:

Kind regards
Michael

Hi, Michael.

Although we need it, yes, iron is one of the more difficult minerals for anyone dealing with IBD. As Jini brings out in the Anemia section of Chapter Two in LTYG, there is a certain amount of controversy over iron supplementation. One side maintains that iron supplements are difficult for the body to absorb and promote infection and the other side sticks with iron supplementation as the best way to treat anemia. Jini suggests taking an iron supplement *and* improving absorption for the best results.

She recommends Ferrasorb because the form of iron it contains is among the easiest for the body to utilize. Of course, overdoing *any* nutrient can lead to problems, so that's something to keep in mind, as well. Balance is key.

It's also a good idea to eat as many iron-rich foods as you can tolerate. (A list is included in the above-referenced section of LTYG.) Or, if you are just plain uncomfortable supplementing with iron, you can try "supplementing" only with the foods listed.

Is anemia the main symptom you're dealing with currently?

Take care,
Nicole
