Where to begin????

Postby stella on Thu Jun 05, 2008 11:34 pm

Hi
My 10 year old son has ulcerative pancolitis. He is currently on Colazide, fish oil , vsl3 and weaning off prednsone. He is recovering from his first flare in a couple of years and so far (fingers crossed) seems to be weaning off pred ok though does have a few weeks to go. He has been on the scd diet for a couple of years, but with moving to the city for university and living with friends, he has found it VERY difficult. He has found it very restricting and the thought of travelling on the diet is quite daunting for him. Hence we are now reading Listen to your gut. The problem we have, is because of his recent treatment, he is actually symptomless so we dont know what he should be taking or eating. He has not had bread or any complex carbohydrate for a couple of years. Whers should he begin????

Thanks
stella

Hi, Stella.

I concur with darkangel.

I, too, have followed the SCD in the past and while I don't now (nor did I for very long, to be honest), I have found that emphasizing lean meat, vegetables, healthy fats, a little fruit, a few nuts, easy on the potatoes and grains, has served me well.

In time, he may want to try raw dairy and try eating grains using the pre-soaking/fermenting method described in the cookbook Nourishing Traditions (available on www.amazon.com). I actually find that I can eat wheat if I prepare it that way, although I don't eat a lot of it, but before I discovered that method of preparation, I had trouble with any grains.

Hopefully, he's open to doing some cooking/food prep of his own. I'm sure it's possible, but I think the most difficult - not to mention most expensive - method of eating whole, natural foods is to have them all prepared by someone else.

Hope that's of some help, at least.

Take care,
Nicole

Thanks. I guess we are also wondering what supplements he should be having at the moment and where to start to try and rid his body of what is causing is UC. Any suggestions? We have started to read the book but because he is synpyomless, it is tricky to know where to start?

Thanks

Hi, Stella.

Okay, I understand.

I'm actually going to suggest that you check out the following discussion thread where Jini talks about weaning from prednisone. The person she was writing to was having some symptoms, but I think you'll still receive a lot of beneficial advice, including which supplements Jini feels are especially beneficial for everyone in the family to take and how to support the body through the weaning process. (If he isn't having symptoms, you want to keep it that way, I know!)

Hope that helps, but if you have questions, please don't hesitate to post them.

Take care,
Nicole

Thanks. Thats a really informative thread and there is lots of good advice. I guess my question really is a little more basic than that even. I have had a better look at the books and have probably answered some of my concerns. You see what we would like to do is to eradicate the cause if possible for his UC and recent flare up, so I am thinking he probably needs to look at the immune booster section primarily, as he doesnt have symptoms to treat, but needs to treat the underlying cause. Is that right?

Thanks again

Hi, stella.

Again, I concur with darkangel's excellent advice. I'm going to be able to retire soon. :)

He'll also benefit from the immune strengtheners. Beyond that, the obvious common-sense stuff. He needs to eat well, he needs to watch that he doesn't overextend himself, etc.

Take care,
Nicole
