Constipation on Elemental Diet

Postby Nina on Thu Mar 13, 2008 9:53 pm

I always seem to experience things a little differently than most people. So when I first looked to the forum for my issue with constipation during the elemental diet, I found that most people's experience is of course diarrhea or loose stools. This is definitely not my experience. I'm concerned because although I am more reqular than I have ever been, I really have to encourage them to move completely, and I am worried about the extra pressure it takes to move things out, and frankly that this may cause some bleeding in this area.

The only thing I can think of is the goat protein. The container does not show this protein as an isolate. Also, I sometimes notice mucus in the back of my throat after drinking this protein, but given the fact that I have immediate tension and headache, and sometimes nausea after cow protien isolates, I thought I was doing good when I didn't get these symptoms with the goat protein. I was hoping to use something more bioavailable than rice protein.

I have tried drinking more water, taking Magnesium using Natural Calm, as well as 500mg vitamin C in each shake. I was hoping that these would soften things up a bit.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Nina

Hi Nina,

How much water are you taking? You need to get at least 10 glasses per day in and best if the water is warm.

Also, you can take up to 1,000 mg magnesium per day.

If this still doesn't do the trick, then add up to 10,000 mg/day of vitamin C in ascorbic acid form. This will also be great for your immune system.

Also, start on the probiotics if you haven't already and work up to the full dose as quickly as possible.

take care,
Jini

How long can a person stay on 10,000mg of C a day?

Does the vitamin C negatively affect the probiotics?

What type of Magnesium is good to use?

I also have this problem and want to find a good natural solution.
Thanks,
Lindy

Hi, Lindy.

No problem taking the Vitamin C as long as you want to. However, if you decide to stop taking it at some point, it would be a good idea to wean yourself off of it, rather than stopping abruptly. (To avoid your immune system having a "rebound", becoming temporarily depressed.

Magnesium citrate is a good form of magnesium to use. See also:
