Losing weight on the IBD Remission Diet

Postby cjm0318 on Sat Jul 21, 2007 9:42 pm

Hello,
Last year Kyle(14 years old) was on the elemental diet for 8 weeks and gained about 20 lbs. Now he has been on the elemental diet for 5 weeks. He started with 7 Absorb Plus for the first 3 weeks and the past 2 weeks he increased it to 8 shakes daily. Rather than gaining weight he is actually losing weight; however, he is growing taller but ever so slowly. His lab work looks great except for the low iron(which is improving). He has no blood in stools and usually has 2 to 3 BM's daily(solid and loose). He does not deviate from the program. He does play tennis about 1 to 2 hours 3 to 4 times a week but it wouldn't seem this would cause him to lose weight.
Do you have any suggestions as to why he might not be gaining weight?? It is just hard to believe he is not gaining weight!!! The Absorb Plus is so easily absorbed; where are the calories going?? Kyle did mention that the eighth shake had been making him a bit sick but he is so intent on gaining weight he thought he would push it.
Oh yeah, another issue that might be preventing him from gaining weight are his allergies. The gi doc wants to put him on a medication called Singulair. Says this might help prevent flare ups later on.
There are no Naturopaths in our area. Do you know how we could locate a decent Naturopath?
Thanks for all your help.

Hi Jeannie,

Sorry for taking so long to respond to this. Again, like Nicole, I have been away on holidays and dealing with some family issues myself.

As Nicole has already outlined in her posts to you - Kyle really needs to look at the emotional side of his healing. Nicole has already given lots of insight and advice, so I'm not going to repeat all that. I too am a big fan of EFT for this sort of problem.

The only other thing that could be hampering his weight gain is a hormonal imbalance. As I state in LTYG, you need to find a doctor who specializes in hormones to be able to assess this. Also, hormones are very directly controlled by emotions, so if you address the emotions via EFT that may also automatically balance the hormones.

take care,
Jini

Hi Jini,
I remember reading in your book, that you also were losing weight despite doing the right diet. And, you went to a couple of doctors as well as a couple of naturopaths before you found the right treatment. We've already taken Kyle to an Endocrinologist who says all labs look normal.
I wanted to look into the hormonal imbalance but wasn't sure what labs/hormones to ask about.
1) what tests did you have done to determine what imbalances were there? 2) and, could you provide the name/phone number of the naturopath you used just in case we can't find one here(in Alabama)?
Kyle has lost another 3 lbs and we are quite desperate to change this.
Thanks for being there
Jeannie

Hi Jeannie,

Just going over the forum and I checked this posting and lo and behold, it looks like I never answered you....but I do remember answering this question, so perhaps I answered it via email or in another post - on the Main Forum?

Anyway, the naturopath I used was Phoebe Chow - if you go to the Health Practitioners listings (on this site) and enter in Naturopaths for Canada, her contact details will pop up. Also use it to search for someone in your area.

I did a 24-hour urine test, blood tests, and saliva tests.

Also, something new: in the Probiotics 1 Teleseminar with Natasha Trenev (go to: http://www.holistichealthshoppe.com/index.php#52 if you missed it), Natasha talked about how your gut flora determines how many calories you can extract from a food. For example, from the same bowl of Cheerios, you may be able to extract 180 calories, while I can only get 85 calories. And it's all to do with the health of your gut flora.

take care,
Jini
