FOS Fructo-Oligosaccarides ok for non-IBDers ????

Postby crampygut on Sun Feb 17, 2008 10:48 am

Hi Nicole, I am a crohn's sufferer that has adhered to LTYG but today i'm writting this for my son who thank god does not have IBD. I was wondering if you could please tell me why on page 54 of LTYG Jini writes not to take any products containing FOS Fructo-Oligosaccarides? My son is taking a product that was recommended to him by a local holistic MD, along with a probiotics, that does contian some Fructo-Oligosaccarides as well as other herbs and amino's in it, to help heal slight bowel inflammaton caused by a recent parasite infection. Is it okay for him to have this product if he does not have IBD or IBS ?

Thanx,
Michael

Hi, Michael.

I hear you! I'm so thankful my kids haven't shown any signs of gut illness, too.

The subject of prebiotics, like FOS, has actually come up before, so I'm going to post that discussion thread for you below. Jini recommends against people with IBS or IBD taking prebiotics because one of the contributors of these conditions is gut dysbiosis. Prebiotics not only feed the good bacteria that you want to encourage, but also some pathogens.

Chris, who used to moderate the IBD Remission Diet forum, tried taking prebiotics. Given what he mentioned in his goodbye, I can only assume that they didn't work out as he had hoped, his research into the subject (which you can read in the above thread) notwithstanding:

Anyway, that gives you an explanation of Jini's reasons.

I don't really have a definitive answer for you regarding your son. I can only give you my thoughts, but know that they're not Gospel.

That said, if it was my son, I'd wait until the inflammation was healed and I had given him supplements of probiotics only (no prebiotics) for a couple of months before adding any prebiotics into the mix. But that's just me.

Please, would you share how things work out if he does use the prebiotics? It's so good to add to the knowledge base for everyone.

I hope that's of some help, at least.

Take care,
Nicole
