Probiotics used with Wild Oregano Oil

Postby the kellys on Fri Nov 17, 2006 9:33 pm

Jini,

I came across the following today, and was wondering if you might give me your thoughts. The first one deals with probiotics while treating parasitic infectiosn (which the wild oregano oil will do), and the 2nd deals with antioxidants while treating yeast (which the wild oregan oil, that little wonder, will also do). I wasn't sure if some fo the recommended "extra additives" to the shakes--bioflavenoids, etc.--are antioxidants. I've extracted the two paragraphs below, but the link to the entire page is as follows: http://www.food-allergy.org/root3.html

"Dr. Leo Galland does not recommend taking probiotics while under treatment for parasitic infestations because bacteria are “food” for protozoal parasites: save your probiotics to take after the course of anti-parasitic treatment is completed."

"Cysteine, glycine, and glutathione, while important antioxidants, can stimulate the growth of yeast in some patients with candidiasis. If you are taking botanical remedies for dysbiosis, your doctor may tell you to temporarily avoid all antioxidants because botanical medicines kill parasites and bacteria by oxidizing them, and thus, antioxidants reduce the effectiveness of these remedies."

By the way, this article also points out the efficacy of the elemental diet and food reintroduction for helping folks with Crohn's.

Many thanks for your thoughts!

Well, I guess my first reaction is that I'm not really qualified to assess or comment on these statements. Here are the questions that come immediately to mind:

- okay, so probiotics feed protozoal parasites, but what about all the other kinds of pathogens in your gut? And what percentage of people with IBD test positive for protozoal parasites?

- how accurate is the statement, "ALL bontanicals..." I'm not a microbiologist, but what I've dug up about wild oregano is that it disintegrates the cell wall of bacteria by dissipating ion gradients, which leads to an impairment of essential processes in the cell and ultimately to cell death. Now, is this, somewhere along the way, classed as an 'oxidative process'? As for HOW wild oregano kills viruses, yeast, fungus, and parasites - I don't know that either.

Is anybody out there qualified to comment? Please lend us your expertise...

Hi, Jini,

Thanks for your thoughts!

I called Joy of the Mountains, and they said that to their knowledge, and they reviewed all of their research, the Oil of Oregano does not kill via oxidation. In fact, they said it is a powerful antioxidant. He said it works just as you said--basically, he said, it burns a hole in the bad guys. I said that they deserve it, and he agreed.

Anyway, many thanks again!

I came across this information on NAHS's website related to your question. Very interesting reading for those of us taking wild oregano oil!

The mechanism of action of Oreganol P73 and Oregacyn P73 appears to be different than standard prescription antibacterials and antifungals. Since prescription antibacterials and antifungals work by interfering with the cell cycle or metabolism, these organisms can change their chemistry and genetic composition to make subsequent uses of these products less effective. It appears as if Oreganol P73 and Oregacyn P73 are powerful enough to disrupt replication on a cellular level. Oreganol P73 and Oregacyn P73 produce a debilitating exothermic reaction that literally heats up and destroys bacteria, suffocates fungi and melts the envelope of viruses. The most amazing fact about Oreganol P73 and Oregacyn P73, according to the book Beyond Antibiotics: Healthier Options for Families, is that bacteria do not develop resistance to oregano oil.

Oreganol P73 was compared to the drugs Streptomycinâ„¢, Vancomycinâ„¢ and penicillin and was found to inhibit drug-resistant Staphylococcus growth as effectively as pharmaceutical antibiotics. Oreganol P73 has demonstrated its antifungal activities against Candida albicans as effectively as Nystatin and Amphotericin B. Viral research is currently underway in the form of a human study.

This was from the FAQ on their site. I recommend reading the whole thing since there are a lot of great questions and answers.
