EMERGEN-C

Postby ssr on Tue Sep 18, 2007 2:45 pm

I am taking Emergen-C just 15-20 minutes after probiotics and wondering if that is OK. It DOES have some Quercetin in it, which I believe is herbal, but its a very small amount. Other than that, all vitamins/minerals, which, I understand, are OK to follow. If anyone has a definitive answer to this, I would really appreciate it. Don't want to null and void my efforts, let alone my $$$.

THANKS so much.

Hi, Susan.

Well, you may not be able to get a definitive answer because that would require testing in a lab and it's not really practical for a company to test every supplement/food for its effect. My guess is, that's why Natren makes a blanket statement on their label which covers all herbs, even though not every herb has antimicrobial effects.

I did do a bit of online research to see if quercetin is listed as having any antimicrobial effects. I didn't see anything indicating that it does.

It would be considered fine to take your probiotics, wait 15-30 minutes and then have an apple, broccoli or red grapes, foods which all contain quercetin. So my take is, it would be fine to do the same thing with Emergen-C.

Hope this is of some help, at least......

Thanks so much, Nicole--

This exchange has prompted me to re-evaluate all that I am taking surrounding my A.M. probiotics and I am changing things quite a bit. My understanding is that 'straight' vitamins and minerals are OK to do within 15-20 mins. of probiotics...just not herbs and prescription meds. That does make for a challenge. My newest method is to get up around 5-5:30 and take Natren, then go back to bed for a bit, shower, etc. so that when I have breakfast I can take all vitamins, Emergen-C, my thyroid prescription, (which needs to be A.M.---and actually is supposed to be on an empty stomach--I can't think of a way to work that part in, so 2 hours away becomes tough), etc.

Thanks again, you are quite right about the quercitin, I hadn't thought of that, and do wonder if the 'engineered' version in Emergen-C might be different from 'the real deal' in the fruit. My super-early dose avoids either, but we'll see how long this plan lasts...today was my first day trying this.

Have a good week--
Susan
