pouchitis

Postby Jeff Barkley on Sun Nov 05, 2006 8:26 pm

I had a total colectomy with a j-pouch loop in 1986. I have since suffered from chronic pouchitis. I have been on flagyl or cipro most of the time since. Would the oil of oregano be a good replacement for the antibiotics prescribed? By the way the elemental diet with absorbplus has helped me immensely....thank you!

Wild Oregano instead of Antibiotics

Postby Jini Admin on Tue Nov 07, 2006 7:55 am

Hi Jeff,

You bet it can! Wild Oregano can even replace vancomycin (the antibiotic reserved for superbugs).

You may also want to try the syringing-up-the-rectum procedure outlined on pg. 78 of LTYG (revised edition) as this will probably provide much faster results than oral ingestion.

Of course, doing both is probably best!

But if the syringing can keep the problem under control, then oral probiotic supplementation can help balance the rest of your GI tract without being killed off all the time by constant systemic antibiotic use (herbal or drug).

Thanks Jini,

Your info is always so helpful, it helps a great deal that you understand the situation we all go through first hand. I think many times doctors aren't able to understand completely the challenges that face folks with IBD/IBS.

Thank you again,
