clear juices

Postby cjm0318 on Fri Jun 08, 2007 6:11 pm

Hello,
My son Kyle is on the IBD diet now. I am unable to find clear juices which are not made from concentrate. These are bottled juices that are mentioned in the IBD Diet book, yes??? Welch's Organic Grape Juice is cloudy. Apple juice is made from concentrate. Usually grape, cranberry, and apple are the only clear juices allowed per hospital diets. I would appreciate any suggestions as to brand names and types of juice allowed on this diet.
Thanks, particularly from my teenage son

Yes, unfortunately it's very difficult to find fresh pressed juices which are clear - due to the pressing they usually contain some remnant of the fruit. The only thing that you can do is to strain the juice again yourself using a finely (tightly) woven tea towel and that should remove the residue - you may have to strain twice - and then it should be fine for consumption (even though it still probably won't look as crystal clear as a concentrate.

take care,
Jini

I wonder if Glaceau's vitaminwater could be used as a "clear juice" substitute (like for making jello). It is simply water, with a natural flavor, and sweetened with fructose. There are vitamins added. My 11 year old daughter started the elemental diet yesterday. Claceau's vitaminwater is something I am considering for her use.

The ingredients you mentioned all sound fine. As long as there's nothing else in it, go ahead!

Jeannie,

Martinelli's fresh squeezed apple juice/cider is very clear. This is the same producer of Martinelli's Sparkling Cider that becomes popular around the holidays.

It is available at major grocery stores (Vons, Albertsons, Whole Foods) and even Costco (their price is the lowest).

Jeannie,

In addition to the Martinelli's organic apple juice, two brands for organic fresh squeezed juices are R.W. Knudsen and Lakewood. I tried filtering Knudsen's organic just concord grape juice and Lakewood's organic pure white grape juice and they came out well.

I used a bowl shaped unbleached coffee filter instead of a tea towel - clipping it to the top of a tall, wide cup (the one that came with my hand blender). I ran the juice through a new filter 3 times, just to be safe. I stopped letting the juice filter through when it reduced from a stream to a drip. I did not attempt to filter the thick juice and pulp that had settled in the bottom of the original juice jars.

Hope this helps you and brings your son some happiness :D ,

Excellent idea to use the coffe filter Heather! Much better than the tea towel. I didn't think of that because we don't drink coffee, so wasn't top of mind - but glad you did!

thanks,
Jini

Hello,
Thanks everybody for the suggestions. I've been using the tea towel and it seems to work well for Lakewood's cranberry juice and grape juice.
But have to admit the coffee filter is a better idea.
And haven't seen the Glaceau's vitamin water but will look for it. My son is in finishing his 4th week of elemental diet and this will be something different for him.
Just want to say, that this elemental diet is amazing. Kyle's labs are all normal except the Iron(and related labs) and this happened less than 10 days of following the elemental diet.
Thanks Jini
