Okay to mix Natren probiotic powders with sorbet?

Postby greengirl on Thu Nov 02, 2006 10:27 pm

I've been having trouble stomaching the 1 t. of each of the three probiotic powders. I've mixed them with applesauce, water, juice, AbsorbPlus, etc. (but not dairy because I don't tolerate dairy well). It's just not palatable!

It is almost enjoyable mixed with 1/4 cup of sorbet, but I'm wondering if the cold temperature is killing the bacteria before I even eat it! I have not contacted Natren, but I know it says on the bottle not to freeze. My instinct is telling me this is not okay, but I'm hoping that it is!

Also, in LTYG it says to take 1 Healthy Trinity capsule 1-2x/day or 1 t. of each powder 3x/day. Is one Healthy Trinity really equal to 9 tsp. of the powders?
I have less than 3 bm/day on average, and I would take the capsule at night before bed (with no bm before morning) so is the Healthy Trinity an equally viable option to the powders?

Thanks for any inut/comments!

Probiotics - Capsules vs. Powders

Postby Jini Admin on Fri Nov 03, 2006 1:36 am

Hi Christine,

Yes, you could take the Healthy Trinity capsule at bedtime (and another one at midday if you wish). Here's the comparison between what's in one capsule vs. 3 tsp. of each Natren powder:

CAPSULE
B. bifidum - 20 billion c.fu.
L. acidophilus - 5 billion c.f.u.
L. bulgaricus - 5 billion c.f.u.

POWDERS (3 tsp of each)
B. bifidum - 12 billion c.f.u.
L. acidophilus - 12 billion c.f.u.
L. bulgaricus - 12 billion c.f.u.

You can see it's a bit difficult to compare amounts since they're not proportionately the same. That's why I say to take 1-2 capsules - depending on where you need more help (colon or stomach/small intestine). B. bifidum goes to the colon, L. acidophilus aids the stomach and small intestine, L. bulgaricus assists all.

The main distinction between powders and capsules is that the capsules do not contain the supernatent (the growth medium the bacteria were cultured in) - they just contain straight bacteria.

Traditionally, good bacteria have always been consumed in their growth medium (yoghurt, kefir, miso, natto, etc.), this helps to "feed" them and thereby assist with implantation and colonization.

However, since everyone's body responds differently, you can test taking each of them, and see which your body prefers. Don't forget, if you hate taking something, then the energy you're ingesting with it, is not working for your health anyway. In that case, I feel it's better to take something possibly less effective (but if your energy is allied with the substance, then it will probably be more effective anyway!).

Now, regarding sorbet, you're right, you cannot put probiotics into cold substances. The room temperature water or non-acidic juice helps to "wake up" the dormant bacteria, so they hit your system "ready to go", thereby maximizing their effectiveness.
